Ismael Saibari Hands Morocco Crucial 1-0 Victory Over Scotland
Morocco defeated Scotland in the latest World Cup clash by 1-0, courtesy of Ismael Saibari’s early first half strike.
Coming into the game unbeaten in 30 matches, Morocco didn’t wait long to score. Brahím Díaz set up Ismael Saibari, who was pushed wide by his defender but still went for goal from a tight angle and fired a brilliant shot into the top corner.
A few minutes later, Morocco almost scored again when Ryan Christie lost the ball in a dangerous area. But Azzedine Ounahi’s cross just missed two teammates in the box.
Morocco kept creating chances and looked the more threatening side. Around the 18th minute, Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn had to step in after Achraf Hakimi got a touch on goal, but Gunn made a good save.
The pressure continued as Bilal El Khannouss was given a chance after a midfield clash. However, he couldn’t keep his shot down and sent it over the bar after the ball bounced awkwardly.
Scotland came out stronger after the break as they tried to find an equaliser. They also appealed for a penalty when McGinn went down after a challenge from Neil El Aynaoui, but nothing was given.
El Khannouss later met a corner with his head, but Scotland keeper Angus Gunn made a key save. As the game went on, Scott McTominay pushed forward and had a shot blocked, while Chemsdine Talbi missed a late chance in stoppage time, sending his effort over the bar.
Even though Scotland tried to attack more, they rarely hit the target and did not really test Moroccan keeper Bono.
The defeat leaves Scotland second in Group D, but they could drop to third depending on Brazil’s result ahead of their meeting next Wednesday. Morocco, meanwhile, moves to the top of the group for now and are in a strong position to go through to the next round.
