Pakistan ex-pacer, Mohammad Amir, has quashed all the rumors about his possible return to the national cricket team. He said that the decision to retire from all formats stands still, and the board now needs to give opportunities to the young players. The pacer shared his views in a video message posted on social media yesterday.
It should be noted that Mohammad Amir announced his retirement on December 14, 2024 after appearing in the ICC T20 World Cup. The pacer didn’t have a great time in the tournament, as he failed to give match-winning performances for Pakistan during the group stage matches.
As a result, Pakistan crashed out of the tournament very early, even though it had many reputable names playing in the squad. The criticism of fans after the early withdrawal then forced many stars like Mohammad Amir to announce their retirement from international cricket.
“For the past two or three days, I have been hearing that Mohammad Amir is making a comeback and taking back his retirement. No discussion has taken place with me about any comeback or withdrawing retirement, nor do I have any such plan. The decision I made regarding retirement is final," said Mohammad Amir in a video message.
The star pacer said that the decision to retire is final, even though many fans are still urging him to make a comeback in international cricket.
"My fans say that I should come back, but Pakistan cricket also needs to move forward," said Amir.
The pacer then shared his views about the betterment of Pakistan cricket by giving opportunities to the youngsters. He said that the team has enough talent to do well in the T20 World Cup, which is approaching fast next year.
“There are young players in the team. If the youngsters play consistently, in two or three years a strong team will be formed. I hope the team will be well-prepared for the World Cup. We played the Asia Cup final; now I hope we play the World Cup final and win as well,” said Mohammad Amir.
After clearing the air about revoking retirement, the pacer then shared views about the possible appointment of Sarfaraz Ahmed as the chief selector of the Pakistan cricket team. It has recently emerged that the former captain is poised to become chief selector, with Aqib Javed likely to be dismissed from the position.
“Regarding Sarfaraz Ahmed, there are reports that he is being made the Chief Selector. Even if he is not appointed Chief Selector, if he comes in as a selector, it will be a good decision. Sarfaraz Ahmed has played with the current players, which could be an advantage,” he added in a video message.
Mohammad Amir praised Sarfaraz Ahmed’s personality, stating that he is a sincere individual who can serve the national team well by making decisions on merit.
“Sarfaraz Ahmed is an honest and sincere person; Pakistan cricket can benefit from people like him. Cricketers should also be capable of managing affairs and should be good players. Many cricketers came before, but they left the team in turmoil.” he further added.
Based on Amir’s comments, it would be interesting to see when the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announces Sarfaraz’s appointment as chief selector. Many fans have welcomed the idea, stating that the former captain is the right man for the selection job.
