Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson clarified why Babar Azam didn’t come out to bat against Namibia. He said the batter was not suited to come in during the 12th over when the team required more power-packed hitting to take the game forward.
"The other day, we got to the 12th over mark. And at that point, Babar Azam is not the best person to come in; we've got plenty of other options who can come in and perform that role towards the end," said Pakistan head coach, Mike Hesson.
He then explained that Babar Azam himself knows what role he needs to play for the team. Similarly, he also understands certain situations where other batters can take the lead to score runs quickly when the innings is nearing its end.
"And Babar is actually the first to acknowledge that, he knows that he's got a certain set of skills that the team require. And there are certain times where other players can perform their role more efficiently," added Mike Hesson.
Babar Azam is currently having a rough T20 World Cup, as he has only scored 66 runs in the last three matches at a dismal strike rate of 115. This poor performance has drawn heavy criticism, as fans are questioning his place in the Pakistan team.
When asked about the batting position of Babar Azam, Mike Hesson said that he has been brought back into the team to play in the middle overs, as he has the ability to anchor the innings. Considering that, he will not be seen opening the batting where the team is prioritizing other batters with a higher strike rate.
"I think Babar is well aware that his strike rate in the power play in the World Cup is less than 100 and that's clearly not the role we think we need. We brought Babar back in for a specific role post the Asia Cup," said Mike Hesson.
