Mexico vs South Africa FIFA World Cup 2026 Preview: Team Analysis, Lineups & Key Players

Mexico vs South Africa FIFA World Cup 2026 Preview: Team Analysis, Lineups & Key Players

Mexico holds the unwanted record of playing the most World Cup matches without ever winning the trophy. While few expect them to end that run this year, they are still seen as the favorites to finish top of Group A.

Mexico have not lost a World Cup opening match since 1994 and will be aiming to continue that record. Their recent form has also been encouraging, with six wins from their last eight matches.

The hosts have been especially strong at the back during that period, keeping six clean sheets. They have also scored 15 goals in those eight games, giving supporters plenty of reasons to feel confident ahead of the tournament opener at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

Talking about South Africa, they are set to play in their fourth FIFA World Cup. Their main goal this time is to reach the knockout stage of the tournament by delivering strong results.

To achieve that, they will need to improve their recent performances. South Africa have gone winless in their last five matches, recording three draws and two defeats. That run is a sharp contrast to their World Cup qualifying campaign, where they finished ahead of Nigeria to top their group.

In this article, we will take a detailed look at the upcoming World Cup clash between Mexico vs South Africa. This will let you know how both sides are preparing for the tournament opener that is expected to be a competitive contest. Let’s first take a look at the squads of both teams below.

Mexico vs South Africa FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Preview

Currently ranked 14th in the FIFA rankings, Mexico did not have to go through the CONCACAF qualifiers because they are one of the tournament hosts. Although they won both the CONCACAF Nations League and the Gold Cup, their form dipped afterwards, with the team failing to win any of its last six friendly matches in 2025.

However, Mexico has looked much better this year. They earned draws against strong European teams Portugal and Belgium before putting together three straight wins over Ghana, Australia and Serbia. Their most impressive result came last Friday in Toluca, where they beat Serbia 5-1.

Now, a win over South Africa would give Mexico a strong chance of finishing on top of Group A before they move on to their remaining matches against South Korea and the Czech Republic.

Talking about South Africa, they have arrived in North America for their fourth World Cup campaign and their first appearance at the tournament since they hosted it in 2010.

Their return comes after missing out on qualification for the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Now, they have another chance to make their mark on the global stage.

The team has been coached by Belgian manager Hugo Broos since 2021 and heads into the tournament ranked 60th in the FIFA standings, making them the 11th highest-ranked team from Africa.

Since reaching the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, South Africa have struggled to find winning form in friendlies. Now, they will be looking to put past setbacks behind them and start the tournament with a win, however, it won’t be an easy task against Mexico.

Mexico vs South Africa: Team News, Key Players

Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is aiming to become the first player to feature in six World Cups this summer. However, the 40-year-old may have to fight for his place, with Raul Rangel also pushing for the starting spot on Thursday.

Captain Edson Alvarez is likely to make his 99th appearance for Mexico and could line up in central defence with Cesar Montes. Coach Javier Aguirre also faces a tough call in midfield, deciding whether to start with Gilberto Mora or go with more experienced players like Orbelin Pineda or Luis Chavez.

For South Africa, Aubrey Modiba is in line to start at left-back after recovering from a hamstring injury and taking part in full training earlier this week. Ime Okon and Mbekezeli Mbokazi are also options to start in the centre of defence.

In midfield, Teboho Mokoena, Thalente Mbatha and Yaya Sithole are expected to play together as a three-man unit. Coach Hugo Broos is likely to choose between a dynamic formation setup, which would allow Khuliso Mudau and Modiba to push forward from full-back and give width to the team.

Final Words

Mexico’s record of six clean sheets in their last eight international games is unlikely to worry South Africa, who have scored in nine of their last 11 matches going into the World Cup. In addition, five of South Africa’s last six games have seen both teams get on the scoresheet.

However, Hugo Broos usually sets his team up more cautiously against stronger sides, focusing on counter-attacks. He will look to counter Mexico’s charge with the same approach, but it won’t be a straightforward task for him in the tournament opener.
