Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane has called on his players to recover quickly from their FA Cup final loss to Manchester City before Tuesday’s “massive” game against Tottenham.
Chelsea lost 1-0 to City at Wembley on Saturday after Antoine Semenyo scored with a clever backheel finish in the second half.
The Blues have now gone without a domestic trophy since 2018 and are also at serious risk of missing out on European football next season.
Without a win in their last seven Premier League matches, McFarlane’s side have dropped to ninth place and will face struggling Tottenham next week in what could be their final chance to rescue a difficult season.
However, even if Chelsea beat their London rivals, it still may not be enough to keep their hopes of qualifying for the Europa League alive, depending on other results.
When asked what could be the future of Chelsea if they fail to qualify for the next European competition, McFarlane said that he cannot respond to that question, as he is only the interim coach of the team.
"You're asking an interim coach what the implications of the club are going to be. I'm not privy to that information.” said Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane.
"My job is to prepare the team for games and training, which I'll be doing on Tuesday for Spurs, which is a massive game for this club." added Calum McFarlane.
McFarlane then applauded the passion of his team, saying all the players were committed to win the trophy, but things didn’t pan out according to their plans.
"It's a really talented group. Lots of quality in that group. The fight and heart has been questioned at times, but the last two performances, I don't think you can question that.” said Calum McFarlane.
"I think they gave everything today to try and win that trophy for the club." added Calum McFarlane.
