England coach Brendon McCullum believes Jofra Archer can be a “huge player” in the upcoming Ashes 2025 series in Australia. Archer impressed in the ODIs against South Africa, he took eight wickets in three matches, including a devastating spell of 4 for 10 in Southampton.

McCullum hailed Archer’s pace, movement, and steep bounce as “box-office bowling” and said England’s cautious approach to his injury return has paid off. “We’ve had a good plan with Jof over the last little while and he’s rewarded us. He’s going to be a massive factor in Australia,” McCullum said.

Bethell’s Breakthrough Keeps Spots Open

Not only the Archer dominates the headlines but young batter Jacob Bethell is also pressing his case. The 21-year-old smashed his maiden ODI century against South Africa.

McCullum hinted that Bethell could challenge Ollie Pope for the No. 3 slot in the Perth Test. The selection remains open and they are still challenging the players. “We’ll work that out when we get there,” he said. “Jacob’s got a huge future, and to score your first professional hundred in an England shirt at 21 is special.”

England’s Fitness Watch

The coach also provided updates on senior players. Mark Wood is set for County Championship action, while captain Ben Stokes is preparing quietly ahead of the Ashes opener. McCullum stressed that a fully fit Stokes will be vital: “For us to be competitive in Australia, a fit, firing and motivated Ben Stokes gives us every chance.
