Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell showed respect towards  Dewald Brevis, recognising him as South Africa’s new rising star. He is often called "Baby AB" in the name of the South Africa legend, AB de Villiers

Maxwell recognised that while flattering, the nickname added pressure early in his career, saying: “It’s a pretty heavy burden he had to have early in his career. He probably got fast‑tracked a little bit into the South African side.”

He added that Brevis has matured markedly: “He’s gone away, worked on his game, and he’s come back playing beautifully. His bat swing is really pure; he’s hard to stop when he gets going.”

Brevis made an impact in the T20I series against Australia. In the second match, he scored 125 off 56 balls. This was a great innings featuring 12 fours and 8 sixes, lifting South Africa to 218/7.

That knock propelled him up the ICC T20I rankings, jumping from the 80th spot to 21st, achieving a career‑best 614 rating points.

Brevis’ performance went beyond the international venue as he also thrived in franchise cricket. In IPL 2025, he joined Chennai Super Kings as an injury replacement and delivered with 225 runs in six matches, with a strike rate of 180, including two half-centuries.
