The Australian team is still uncertain about who will open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja in the Ashes. Mitchell Marsh has now been included in the debate after a strong performance in the India series. He is currently planning to feature in the T20I series against India, but the call to the Ashes could also come very soon.

Besides Marsh, Matt Renshaw is also being discussed as the potential opening batter with Usman Khawaja. The Queensland batter has performed tremendously well in the domestic circuit. This is the exact reason why his name is coming into the discussion, as the preparation for the Perth test is heating up.

The head coach of the Australian team, Andrew McDonald, has also said that the selection panel could pick one player from the white ball setup to feature in the Ashes. He didn’t confirm Marsh as the potential pick, but voiced his support by saying that the batter is currently in good form.

"We would be comfortable picking someone, and if you want to put a name to it, Mitch Marsh, out of white-ball cricket, if we felt like that was going to benefit the Test team. He's the captain of the white-ball team. It's very hard for him to vacate and balance out Test preparation, if he was to be in the window for that,” said Andrew McDonald.

He further said that Marsh is currently in good form, which makes his case for the Ashes even stronger. When the batter was dropped from the team last summer, he was experiencing a bit of a lean patch. Taking that into view, the management decided to bring in Beau Webster in his place, as he was in much better form at the domestic level.

"We feel he's batting as well as he has for a long period of time. And when he got dropped last summer, I think he was one of our highest averages from Headingley [in the 2023 Ashes] to that point. He hit a bit of a flat patch there, and we felt it best at that time to bring Beau Webster in," said Andrew McDonald.

The head coach then voiced his support, saying that Marsh’s Test career isn’t over. He is confident that the batter will reclaim his spot by showcasing strong performances in the India series, as well as Shield cricket.

"We still haven't given up on Mitch Marsh's Test career. So what would the prep look like for him? It would have to be through white ball or maybe some Shield cricket after white ball if he isn't in that first squad, and then he can press his claim through that,” said Andrew McDonald.

Meanwhile, Usman Khawaja believes that Matt Renshaw has made his case strong for the Ashes by producing decent performances against India. He also voiced support for Marnus Labuschagne, saying that his presence in the batting lineup at number 3 is important.

"I think our best lineup has Marnus three, [Steve] Smith four, and [Travis] Head five. I know if Renshaw is picked, that he is in the best space right now to have a crack at Australia again and be ready to score runs. Obviously, I am a little bit biased because he is my opening partner and a friend of mine, but he's been there and done it. He has scored 184 for Australia,” said Usman Khawaja.

It would be interesting to see how Australia will pick its Playing XI for the first Ashes test at Perth. The concerns about the opening batting pair are still unresolved, and Pat Cummins’s injury has made matters worse. England is certainly keeping an eye on all these issues. However, they have a few of their own lingering in the background.
