Marcus Stoinis has returned to the Australian T20 team to face a three-match series against New Zealand, beginning on October 1 in Mount Maunganui. The 36-year-old all rounder, who last played in November 2024, now has his eyes set on the T20 World Cup, which will be held next year in India and Sri Lanka.
The comeback of Stoinis is at the right moment. He retired from ODIs earlier this year but maintained his fitness through heavy T20 appearances with Punjab Kings in the IPL and Trent Rockets in The Hundred, both of which reached the final with him playing influential roles. His experience and the ability to hit make him a good choice, but the competition in the middle order is fierce. Cameron Green, Tim David, and Mitch Owen all hold similar positions.
Selectors have also brought back Owen, Matthew Short, and Xavier Bartlett to add depth to the squad. Short has recovered from a side strain that kept him out of the West Indies tour, while Bartlett continues to impress with the ball. Alex Carey and Aaron Hardie miss out after filling in as injury replacements against South Africa.
Mitchell Starc’s retirement from T20 internationals leaves a significant gap, while Pat Cummins is racing against time to return from a back injury ahead of the Ashes. Mitchell Marsh continues as captain, with Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa leading the spin department.
The series will not only test Australia’s bench strength but also set the tone for players like Stoinis, who are desperate to prove they still belong on the big stage.
