Manchester United Suffer Double Blow Ahead of Key Champions League Clash Against Atletico
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has shared the latest team news ahead of their high-octane Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid at the Estadio Metropolitano.
United began their European campaign with a convincing 4-0 victory over Sabah at Old Trafford. However, their domestic form has been disappointing. With just six points from six Premier League games, the Red Devils are enduring their poorest league start since the 1986–87 season.
The English side now face a tough test against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday as they look to build on their opening Champions League result.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Carrick was asked about Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo, who were absent from training at Carrington. The club had yet to announce the travelling squad, leaving questions over the availability of both players for the upcoming match.
"They've not travelled, they both picked up issues in the game on Saturday [against Spurs] and we were working through that, to see what that looks like," said Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick.
"At the moment, they are not ready for the game tomorrow." added Michael Carrick.
Despite these absences, Carrick remains confident about his team’s chances, revealing that Matthijs de Ligt and young defender Dan Armer are both back in the squad.
"We're not light on numbers, no. Of course, we've got a couple of issues with some players missing out but we're definitely not light on numbers. It's good for Dan to be part of it and for younger players to sample it, the build-up to the game, and get a sense of it.” said Michael Carrick.
"It's good to have Matta in and around it. We've had a little bit of patience with him, working through that and working hard to get to this stage. He's had a long journey so we're delighted to have him back." added Michael Carrick.
The upcoming Champions League clash between Manchester United vs Atletico Madrid is an eagerly awaited contest, in which both sides are keen to secure a convincing victory.
Unlike the United, Diego Simeone has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the match, with both Pablo Barrios and Alexander Sorloth back in contention after their recent spells on the sidelines. Both players featured in Atletico’s 2-1 win over Alaves at the weekend, which enhanced their confidence for the upcoming clash. Apart from them, Arnau Ortiz is also available, giving Simeone more options when selecting his team for tomorrow’s match.
