Chelsea slipped to a fourth straight home defeat in the Premier League for the first time since 1998, as Manchester United crushed them by 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. The result also helped United tighten their grip on a top-three spot where the competition is getting fierce day by day.
Both teams came into the match after recent league losses, so it wasn’t the ideal buildup for such an important game in the race for a Champions League spot. Chelsea were under more pressure, having won just once in their last seven home matches, and they looked more dangerous in a quiet first half.
Estêvão came close to scoring when his shot from outside the box hit the post, but he had to go off injured soon after. Enzo Fernández also went close with a shot that just missed the target as Chelsea started to improve. However, United made the most of their only shot on target in the first half, with Matheus Cunha finishing from Bruno Fernandes’ cutback.
After the break, Chelsea had to push forward to stay in the fight for a top-four spot, and they did try to take control. First, Delap’s header struck the woodwork, and then Noussair Mazraoui also hit it, though that effort wouldn’t have counted anyway as the ball had already touched Wesley Fofana’s hand.
Cole Palmer also missed the target, and despite these chances, Chelsea couldn’t really build sustained pressure. Moisés Caicedo then came very close to scoring the equalizer, but Manchester United stayed solid at the back and managed to hold on to their lead. As a result, the Red Devils won the match by 1-0, making sure to secure their place in the top three of the Premier League points table.
