Manchester City beat Brentford in an important match to stay in the Premier League title race, moving just two points behind leaders Arsenal.
After drawing 3-3 with Everton on Monday, Pep Guardiola’s team responded well, scoring three goals in the second half against Brentford to pile pressure back on the table leaders.
Belgium international Jeremy Doku was the standout player on the pitch. He almost scored in the first two minutes, but Caoimhin Kelleher made a low save to stop him. Doku then delivered a cross that Erling Haaland headed just wide.
Manchester City struggled to finish their chances in the first half. Haaland also sent another header straight at Kelleher, while a shot from him was blocked by Kristoffer Ajer.
City finally broke through around the hour mark when Doku cut inside and curled a brilliant shot into the far corner. He had done something similar late in the game against Everton on Monday, when he scored to help his team earn a point.
Haaland scored again with 15 minutes left, easing the tension at the Etihad Stadium, and substitute Omar Marmoush later added a third goal near the end.
Brentford had already tested City earlier in the game. Gianluigi Donnarumma struggled to deal with Michael Kayode’s long throw, which led to a clearance off the line, and he also had to push away a dangerous curling free-kick from Mathias Jensen.
Later in the second half, he made a sharp save to deny Igor Thiago at the near post. In the end, Donnarumma kept a clean sheet, while Brentford remained eighth in the table.
Interestingly, City fans were unhappy at half-time, with many disappointed as the team struggled to get going. Most things were not working for the hosts, and they were left trying their luck with long-range shots.
However, Guardiola’s side improved after the break. Doku and Haaland both scored to turn the game around, and a late goal from Marmoush in the 92nd minute made sure City stayed in the race.
Now they will be hoping Arsenal drop points, but City also have to win their next two league matches against Crystal Palace and Bournemouth if they want the title fight to go down to the final day.
