Manchester City’s 12th straight league win over Burnley took them to the top of the Premier League points table for the first time since August. The 1-0 victory also confirmed Burnley’s relegation to the Championship.
Some Burnley fans already feared a heavy defeat, and those worries nearly came true within the first three minutes when Rayan Cherki’s shot was pushed onto the crossbar by Martin Dúbravka.
The visitors kept pressing and scored just two minutes later. Jérémy Doku set up Erling Haaland with a through ball, and he calmly chipped it over Dúbravka into the far corner to give City the lead.
The Citizens were lucky a couple of times as Burnley wasted two big chances to equalise. Quilindschy Hartman and Zian Flemming both missed good opportunities that could have brought Burnley back into the game.
Knowing goal difference could matter in a close title race, City kept attacking even after the first strike. Nico O’Reilly, Bernardo Silva, and Rayan Cherki all had chances to make it 2-0, but they couldn’t get past Martin Dúbravka.
Pep Guardiola looked frustrated on the sideline and was asking for more from his players. Soon after the break, Erling Haaland almost responded, but his shot hit the post just 10 minutes into the second half.
Apart from that early chance, Manchester City looked flat and had a hard time breaking Burnley down. That gave some hope to Arsenal fans watching at home that the title race might still be open.
Meanwhile, City kept pushing until the final moments and got the win, but they may feel a bit disappointed. They didn’t improve their goal difference in what was, at least on paper, one of their easiest remaining matches.
The victory however was still enough to take them to the top of the Premier League points table, which was a big contrast to Burnley. Their relegation has now been confirmed after a poor season, where they managed just one win in their last 25 league games.
Manchester City are now leading the title race, but many would expect a team in that position to win more comfortably against an opponent like this. They will need to start scoring more in their final five league games, especially in their last match against fourth-placed Aston Villa, if they want to finish as champions.
