Luke Wright has announced that he will leave his role as England men’s selector after the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. After more than three years in the position, Wright has informed the ECB of his decision to step down.
The announcement came following the disappointing defeat of England in the Ashes 2025. The English team performed poorly throughout the series, as Australia registered an emphatic 4-1 victory in the series.
"It has been a true honor and privilege to serve as an England Men's selector over the past three years. I have fully immersed myself in the role and am incredibly proud of the players we have brought through,” said Luke Wright.
He further added that the selector’s role demands significant time away from home, which has become increasingly difficult for Wright as he has a young family. Therefore, he has decided to step down and is looking forward to other opportunities that better suit his schedule.
"The role demands significant travel and time away from home, and with a young family, the time feels right to pass the baton on to the next person. I now look forward with real interest and enthusiasm to whatever cricketing roles the future may hold," said Luke Wright.
The managing director of England cricket, Rob Key, also acknowledged Luke Wright’s decision. He praised Wright for his sincere contributions to England cricket and wished him well in his future endeavors.
"I have absolutely loved working with Luke. His contribution to English cricket has been exceptional, and I trust his judgement as much as anyone. He has added so much more to this role than just being a selector. I'm very sad to see him go, and I wish him and his family all the best for the future. I have no doubt that at some stage down the road he will enhance English cricket once again," said managing director of England cricket, Rob Key.
The resignation of Luke Wright has come at an important stage, when pressure is also mounting on Rob Key and Brendon McCullum after England faced a humiliating defeat in the Ashes 2025. It will be interesting to see what decisions they take next, as fans are demanding answers following the recent series loss.
