Luka Modric Extends International Career: Veteran Available for Croatia Nations League Campaign

Luka Modric will remain available for Croatia at the age of 41, continuing a national-team career that has already produced 202 appearances. The AC Milan midfielder is expected to be part of Croatia’s squad for their upcoming Nations League fixtures, including two meetings with England.

Modric’s decision gives new manager Slaven Bilic the chance to work with the veteran again. Bilic coached Croatia when Modric was beginning his senior international career and is now back in charge after 14 years.

The midfielder’s longevity has made him Croatia’s record appearance holder since making his debut in March 2006. His continued involvement also gives Bilic one of the most experienced players in the country’s history as he starts another spell in charge.

"Of course, Luka's decision makes me extremely happy," Bilic said.

"We are all aware what he brings to Croatia, both on and off the pitch.

"I'm looking forward to working with him again, after 14 years, and we both share a strong ambition to keep Croatia a top, successful team, shoulder to shoulder with the best teams in the world."

Modric’s record with Croatia includes two World Cup podium finishes and a runners-up medal. He was awarded the Golden Ball at the 2018 World Cup after Croatia reached the final in Russia, while the team finished third at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

His international future had been uncertain after Croatia’s latest World Cup campaign, with retirement having been considered. Instead, Modric has chosen to continue, extending a spell with the national side that has now passed the 20-year mark.

Croatia’s next fixtures will put that decision to an early test. They are scheduled to play the Czech Republic on September 26 before meeting Spain on September 29. England then visit Croatia on October 3, with the return fixture taking place at Wembley on November 12.

For Bilic, Modric’s presence means Croatia can call on a player he knows from the beginning of his international career while preparing the team for another Nations League campaign.
