Luis Diaz, who transferred from Liverpool to Bayern Munich last summer, has declared his move a success after an exceptional season in Germany. Since joining the Bundesliga leaders in July for €75 million ($87m), the Colombian has tallied 23 goals and 18 assists in 40 games.
Reflecting on his decision, Diaz told ESPN, "Deciding to join Bayern was the right choice. I'm really happy and I enjoy every match. I feel great, I'm in good shape, and that means I'm ready to help the team."
Bayern currently top the Bundesliga with a nine-point advantage over Borussia Dortmund, with just six games remaining. The club is also eyeing the German Cup, with a semifinal clash against Bayer Leverkusen scheduled for April 22.
Diaz played a key role in Bayern’s 2-1 victory at the Bernabeu during the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. The team registered nine shots on target and executed their game plan effectively, though Diaz believes Bayern could have extended their lead.
"We have a clear plan, we're a very close-knit group, and that shows on the pitch," Diaz explained. "We'd already analysed Real Madrid, and the move [regarding the opening goal] went exactly as we'd planned. We felt more comfortable as the game progressed, won the ball back more often and controlled the game better. That's what we like to do. We're very happy, but we're left with a slight feeling of disappointment that we could have scored one or two more goals. We played a great match against a very tough opponent."
Bayern Munich aim to maintain momentum in both domestic and European competitions, relying on Diaz’s attacking prowess and the squad’s cohesion. The return leg against Real Madrid promises to be a decisive test as they seek to secure a place in the semifinals.
