Liverpool vs Chelsea 1-1 Draw: Enzo Fernandez Cancels Out Gravenberch Opener

Liverpool vs Chelsea 1-1 Draw: Enzo Fernandez Cancels Out Gravenberch Opener

Liverpool vs Chelsea 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday after a late set-piece from Enzo Fernandez cancelled out Ryan Gravenberch’s opener, leaving Liverpool on 59 points from 36 matches in the Premier League. The result also ended Chelsea’s six-game losing run and gave caretaker manager Calum MacFarlane his first point in charge.

The home side started strongly and went ahead inside the opening minutes through Gravenberch, who cut in from the left before curling a finish from the edge of the box. Liverpool controlled large phases of the first half and looked comfortable until Chelsea found a route back into the contest.

Fernandez Equaliser Shifts Momentum

Chelsea levelled in the first half when Fernandez delivered a low free kick from the right that drifted through a crowded area and ended in the bottom corner. Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili appeared unsighted as the ball made its way through traffic.

Both sides had goals ruled out for offside during a tight second half. Liverpool also came close on multiple occasions, with Dominik Szoboszlai striking the post and Virgil van Dijk hitting the crossbar from a corner as the pressure built.

Manager Reaction and Late Pressure

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella said after the match:

“I think the effort today was really good. I don't think it was probably our best moments, but we showed if we play together and if we play together then we have a good level.

Hopefully we can win a bit of confidence from this game because next week we have a massive game (against Manchester City in the FA Cup final).

We aren't happy because we wanted the three points, but we are happy that we showed we're a really good team if we put in the effort and fight together. Hopefully we can learn from this game and play well in these last few games.”

Late substitutions from Liverpool manager Arne Slot drew boos from sections of the Anfield crowd as both teams pushed for a winner, but neither side could find a breakthrough.

League Context

Liverpool remain in fourth place, edging closer to Champions League qualification, while Chelsea sit ninth after collecting a point on the road.
