After 15 weeks sidelined by injury, Alexander Isak has been named in the Liverpool squad for Wednesday night’s Champions League quarterfinal at Paris Saint-Germain. The 26-year-old, who moved from Newcastle in a deadline-day transfer worth £125 million ($166m), has struggled to live up to expectations, making just 16 appearances since joining.
Isak’s injury setbacks included minor issues before December, culminating in a significant ankle problem requiring surgery after scoring the opening goal in a 2-1 win over Tottenham. The surgery involved a fibula fracture, keeping him out for months.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot addressed Isak’s role ahead of the match, confirming his fitness but clarifying that he would not start.
"He finished close to a week of team training sessions, he can play a part otherwise I wouldn't take him," Slot said at the pre-game press conference. "We think we can get a performance out of him now, but not to start."
The Sweden international trained with the squad last Thursday and took part in sessions on Tuesday morning before traveling to France.
Liverpool have faced mounting pressure following a poor run of form, highlighted by a 4-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City. Isak’s return to the 21-man squad provides a potential lift for Slot’s side, who need a strong showing in the first leg at Parc des Princes.
While Isak is not expected to start, his presence on the bench gives Liverpool an added attacking option and a chance to influence the match in the latter stages.
The Swedish forward’s return will be closely watched by fans as Liverpool aim to recover their momentum in the Champions League. His inclusion could prove pivotal in a high-stakes quarterfinal clash against a strong PSG side.
