Argentina Superstar Lionel Messi Breaks All-Time World Cup Goals Record
At 38, many people thought Lionel Messi might no longer be playing at the top level. Instead, he keeps proving everyone wrong by continuing to break some of football’s biggest records.
Messi scored in the 38th minute against Austria in the ongoing World Cup match, taking his tally to 17 World Cup goals. That strike made him the outright highest goalscorer in the history of the men's FIFA World Cup.
He could have reached the milestone earlier in the contest, but his penalty went wide of the post. It was his third missed penalty from seven attempts at the World Cup, the most by any player outside of penalty shootouts.
Still, Messi quickly made up for it. He calmly finished from inside the Austria penalty area, turning Facundo Medina’s low cross from the left into the back of the net.
With his stunning strike, Argentina are currently ahead in the game with 1-0, while Messi is still looking strong to score another before the stoppage time.
