Leeds shocked Manchester United by winning a league game at Old Trafford for the first time since 1981, taking a big step towards safety in a tough night for Michael Carrick’s side. Sir Jim Ratcliffe was seen looking serious in the stands as United put in a very poor first-half performance.
They showed some improvement after the break, but only after Lisandro Martinez, back from a two-month injury layoff, was sent off for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair. It was a controversial decision that angered many fans, however, it did the job for Leeds.
Noah Okafor gave Leeds United the lead early on with a first-time finish in the fifth minute, and later made it 2-0 before half-time when his shot took a deflection off Leny Yoro and went into the net.
Martinez’s red card, given after a VAR review, seemed to lift Manchester United. Casemiro then pulled one back after Bruno Fernandes set up his 17th assist of the season, just three short of the Premier League record in a single campaign.
Even with 10 men, United kept going for an equaliser. Benjamin Sesko came close twice in a minute, but was stopped first by goalkeeper Karl Darlow and then by Dominic Calvert-Lewin clearing off the line. Still, they could not find the equaliser and ended up losing their first home match under Carrick.
The latest poor result means they will now travel to Chelsea on Saturday with plenty of unanswered questions. Harry Maguire could still miss that game due to suspension, and a defeat would leave them only four points ahead of Leroy Rosenior’s inconsistent team with five matches left to play.
Leeds United, on the other hand, will face bottom-placed Wolves at Elland Road. With their relegation rivals not playing at the same time, a win would take them nine points clear of the danger zone. This latest victory against Manchester United will give them confidence to come hard at Wolves, however, that game is also expected to be a tough encounter.
