Chasing a huge target of 186 in a rain-curtailed 13-over match, Multan Sultans’ pursuit began with a series of demoralizing whimpers. The early exchange at the Gaddafi Stadium felt less like a chase and more like a survival drill as the Sultans slumped to a dismal 28/2 after the powerplay.
The nightmare started almost immediately. Shaheen Shah Afridi, steaming in with the new ball, found a hint of late swing that left the Multan openers searching for answers. The captain led from the front, trapping the dangerous Steven Smith plumb in front for a duck in his 2nd over.
The disappointment deepened in the 4th over of the match when Josh Philippe, the linchpin of the Sultans’ batting, uncharacteristically mistimed a lofted drive off Ubaid Shah.
Now, Sultans looked utterly shell-shocked. With their top two back in the dugout and the required rate already spiraling above 17 runs per over, Multan faces a mountain that looks increasingly impossible to climb.
