Real Madrid head into Sunday’s season-defining showdown against Barcelona with fresh noise swirling around their biggest star. This time, it has little to do with goals or trophies.

Instead, Real Madrid news has been dominated by growing frustration aimed at Kylian Mbappe after images from his short holiday in Sardinia spread rapidly online. The French striker, currently recovering from injury, had been granted rest days by the club alongside Thibaut Courtois and Arda Guler. Still, many supporters were not impressed.

An online petition calling for fans to “make their voices heard” only pushed the situation further into the spotlight. Suddenly, the atmosphere around the club feels tense again.

The timing could hardly be worse. Barcelona are closing in on the league title, while Madrid continue fighting to keep the race alive. That pressure has magnified every move around the squad, especially involving Mbappe.

Fuel was added after photos emerged showing the striker alongside actress Ester Exposito just days before Madrid’s important league fixture against Espanyol. Although Madrid secured a 2-0 victory, debate around the forward did not cool down.

Coach Alvaro Arbeloa attempted to ease the situation publicly but his words sparked another wave of discussion. He stressed that Real Madrid was built on sacrifice, sweat and commitment, not glamour away from the pitch. 

Mbappe’s camp later responded, insisting the criticism had been exaggerated and stressing that his recovery programme remained fully supervised by the club.

Despite the noise, the numbers remain huge. Mbappe has scored 41 goals in 41 matches this season. That statistic alone explains why Madrid still lean heavily on him. Yet parts of the support now question his attitude and involvement during difficult moments.

Fans quickly linked their calls for unity to the ongoing Kylian Mbappe backlash surrounding the squad.
