Kumar Sangakkara Joins SLC Revamp Panel Amid Major Overhaul

Sangakkara’s inclusion in the committee, which is tasked with managing the governance of SLC, makes him the most prominent cricketer on the panel. Alongside him, Mahanama and Wettimuny bring their extensive cricketing experience to the table, while the rest of the members come from corporate, legal, and political backgrounds.

Wickramaratne, a former Member of Parliament with Sri Lanka’s main opposition party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, will serve as the chair of the committee. He has reportedly stepped down from his political roles to take on this new position, signaling the panel's independence from direct government influence.

Key Goals of the Transformation Committee

Wickramaratne shared his excitement about leading the committee: “I am privileged to lead a nine-member committee of individuals with impeccable integrity and expertise." He emphasized that the committee’s primary focus will be restructuring SLC’s governance framework, with a special emphasis on implementing a new constitution.

“Our immediate priority is a total overhaul of the governance framework at SLC,” Wickramaratne said. “The cornerstone of this effort will be the implementation of the new constitution, ensuring it serves as a robust, modern foundation for the sport."

The existing SLC constitution has faced long-standing criticism for being outdated and inefficient, often consolidating too much power in underperforming structures, leading to inefficiencies and corruption concerns. The committee’s legal experts, Dinal Phillips and Upul Kumarapperuma, will likely play key roles in these reforms.

Focus on National Team Performance

In addition to structural reforms, a critical priority will be enhancing the national cricket team’s performance on the field. The committee will focus on developing infrastructure, support systems, and player motivation, aiming to elevate Sri Lanka back to the top tier of international rankings.

"We will focus on establishing the structures, world-class facilities, and incentive models necessary to empower our national teams," said Wickramaratne. "Our goal is to enable our players to consistently deliver world-class performances and elevate Sri Lanka back to the top tier of international rankings."

The International Response and Political Impact

The formation of the committee comes amid criticism of former SLC president Shammi Silva, who faced backlash due to Sri Lanka’s poor showings in international tournaments. The committee’s structure, particularly the appointment of an opposition political figure like Wickramaratne as chair, signals a shift in the governance of Sri Lankan cricket.

While the International Cricket Council (ICC) has not commented yet, it has historically been strict about government interference in cricket administration in Sri Lanka.
