Harry Kane Joins Ronaldo In Elite Record Book As England Seals Knockout Spot

Harry Kane Joins Ronaldo In Elite Record Book As England Seals Knockout Spot

England booked their place in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 with a 2-1 win over DR Congo, but the result also marked another personal milestone for captain Harry Kane. The striker's late brace moved him into elite company, with Kane joining Ronaldo in becoming one of the defining talking points after the knockout victory.

Kane struck in the 75th and 86th minutes to overturn an early setback after DR Congo had gone ahead through Brian Cipenga in the seventh minute. The comeback sends England into a last-16 meeting with Mexico at the Estadio Azteca on Monday.

Kane Joins Ronaldo With Another Major Tournament Landmark

The two goals lifted Kane to 20 combined goals across the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more across the two tournaments, with 24 goals. Kane's tally is made up of 13 World Cup goals and seven at the European Championship.

The England captain has also emerged as the leading scorer in knockout matches at major international tournaments since Euro 2020. He now has 10 goals across World Cup and European Championship knockout fixtures, ahead of Kylian Mbappé, who has seven, while Dani Olmo, Kasper Dolberg and Gonçalo Ramos have three each.

Records Continue to Fall

Kane's latest goals also reshaped England and World Cup record books. His 13 World Cup goals moved him beyond Pelé's tournament total, while he also became England's second-highest scorer in World Cup knockout matches with five goals, joining Geoff Hurst. Only Gary Lineker, with six knockout goals, remains ahead of him in that category.

The England forward has also gone past Lineker's overall World Cup tally of 10 goals, adding another milestone to a career that continues to produce decisive contributions on football's biggest stage.
