As the Asia Cup edges closer, the debate over India's batting order has gathered fresh heat. With Shubman Gill back in the side and certain to reclaim his opening slot alongside Abhishek Sharma, the spotlight has turned to the No. 3 position. Former India batter Mohammed Kaif has made his choice clear. He says Sanju Samson deserves the spot, while young Tilak Varma can afford to wait.

Kaif, with a long history of expressing India's middle-order plans, justified Samson's suitability to play better against top-class spinners. Against a team such as Afghanistan, where Rashid Khan is likely to be decisive, Kaif sees the decision of Samson as the one who plays his fearless strokes on the ground. "He is among the top six-hitters in the IPL, and when Rashid comes on, you need someone who can clear the ropes without hesitation," Kaif said.

He also reminded fans that Sanju Samson has scored big in tough conditions before. Two centuries in South Africa as an opener show that he can fit and provide against pace, as well as spin. His performance in the IPL has also given him a good case to be considered, as he has been scoring 400+ runs in a season.

Tilak Varma ranks No. 2 in T20I batting and has impressed since usurping the No. 3 spot in the South Africa series. But Kaif urged to be patient, and it is wiser to groom Samson in this position before the World Cup, he said.

"Tilak is young and will get plenty of chances. For now, Samson deserves a consistent run," Kaif concluded. The selectors now face the challenging task of balancing youthful promise with proven experience as the tournament looms.
