Julian Metherell, the current chair of London Spirit, has been announced as the next President of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), succeeding Ed Smith. Metherell, who has been an active member of MCC for 40 years, will officially assume the presidency in October 2026. His appointment comes at an exciting time, as the club prepares to embrace new opportunities and challenges.
Metherell's professional background is deeply rooted in finance. He spent over a decade at Goldman Sachs, including a role as the CEO of the UK investment banking division from 2006 to 2011. Metherell has also been instrumental in the energy sector, founding and serving as the CFO of Genel Energy, a London-listed company.
His expertise extends beyond finance; he chaired the Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA) from 2019 to 2024 and is currently the chair of the Advisory Board at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge.
In a statement, Metherell shared his excitement about the new position:
"I am deeply honoured to take on the role of MCC President, following in the footsteps of many of my cricketing idols. I have a long connection with MCC and I have many cherished memories at Lord's."
The decision to appoint Metherell highlights his strong ties with the MCC and the growing significance of London Spirit within the club's leadership. Under his guidance, MCC has begun a new chapter, with Metherell playing a pivotal role in the successful 2025 Hundred equity sale. This deal, which saw a Silicon Valley consortium, led by Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora, invest £145 million for a 49% stake in London Spirit, made the franchise the richest in the competition.
Metherell's appointment also aligns with the increasing presence of London Spirit in shaping MCC's future direction. Earlier this year, the club introduced a rebranded logo and team kit, incorporating MCC's iconic egg-and-bacon livery alongside a royal blue color scheme.
Ed Smith, the outgoing MCC President, expressed his confidence in Metherell's leadership, stating:
"During such an exciting period for MCC, I wanted to choose a successor with huge expertise and experience, combined with a deep passion for the game and for the club. Julian Metherell is a great and trusted friend to cricket and an exceptional candidate."
As MCC enters a new era under Metherell’s leadership, Lord's is set to host the highly anticipated Ashes series between Australia’s men's and women's teams in 2027.
