Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott is confident in his team’s chances at the Asia Cup 2025. He believes Afghanistan can secure wins against both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Trott came in 2022. Since then he has already witnessed Afghanistan Cricket making historic milestones. During his leadership, the team has made it to the semi-finals of the last T20 world cup. The Afghanistan team has now made the fans believe that they too can compete with the finest sides in the world.

“Since I’ve been with the side, we’ve had some memorable moments,” Trott said.

“I think back to beating Bangladesh in a 50-over series away in 2023. It had never been done before, and it gave us confidence. Then the win in St Vincent at the 2024 World Cup helped us qualify for the semi-final. That was a huge moment for us.”

Trott praised the players for embracing new challenges and breaking barriers. “This group isn’t afraid of trying new things. Whenever there’s a big obstacle, they want to rise to it. That’s what makes them special,” he said.

Much of Afghanistan’s strength comes from their spin bowling. With Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and youngster AM Ghazanfar, Trott believes they have the right skillset to make a mark.

Trott understands just how crucial quality spinners are in sub-continent conditions and plans to make the most of that advantage as the T20 World Cup approaches early next year.

"Right now, we have a great opportunity with the Asia Cup. Looking a bit further ahead, with the World Cup coming up in February, we have good memories of playing in the sub-continent - in Sri Lanka and India," he added.

He also emphasizes, one can be lured into looking too far off but at this point the focus is on the next match against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup.
