Joe Root made his stance clear on Sunday. He said the Ashes does not need a pink-ball Test and called the traditional format stronger for this contest.

The second Test at the Gabba begins on December 4, with tickets for the first three days already sold out. Despite the demand, Root said the pink ball adds nothing essential to a series that carries its own weight. He acknowledged it works well in Australia but maintained that the Ashes stands on its own.

A Packed Gabba, Yet Root Isn’t Convinced

Root pointed to Australia’s strong record with the pink ball. They have lost only once in 14 appearances, a run that gives them an obvious edge under lights. He said the format is popular locally but questioned whether it fits a marquee series.

He added that England understand the challenge, especially in twilight sessions where the pink ball often swings more. Australia have controlled those passages for years, and Root admitted that the numbers speak for themselves.

Australia’s Record Looms Large

Even so, he backed the red ball as the better test of skill. He said it produces a more consistent contest and reflects the long-standing nature of the Ashes.

Root’s comments arrive just days before the 2nd Test in Brisbane, adding a sharper tone to an already important week for both sides.

In the end, Root’s comments added spice to an already fiery buildup. Honestly, the tension is building, and Brisbane can sense it.
