Joburg Super Kings started the SA20 2026 season on a high note as they defeated Pretoria Capitals by 22 runs at Centurion. Duan Jansen was their standout bowler in the second innings, as his four-over spell wreaked havoc on the Pretoria Capitals’ batting lineup. He kept things tight throughout the innings, making the chase of 169 runs difficult for the Capitals.

Despite getting a good start, Pretoria Capitals failed to chase a modest target due to a poor batting display. They would be feeling disappointed after the match, as a target of 169 runs was very much achievable.

Batting first, Joburg Super Kings faltered early in the Powerplay after losing Faf du Plessis and Matthew de Villiers. The dismissal of both openers was a huge blow for JSK, however, Rilee Rossouw responded with a perfect counterpunch. He batted with great authority, showcasing no signs of pressure despite the early loss of wickets.

This gave a lot of confidence to the dugout, which had become a bit anxious after the dismissals of both openers. Alongside Rossouw, Wiaan Mulder was equally impressive, as he took down the bowlers confidently during the first ten overs. He built a strong partnership with Rossouw that allowed Joburg Super Kings to recover from a critical situation.

Striking at 145, Rilee Rossouw was going well until Tymal Mills dismissed him in the 13th over. He was dismissed after scoring a valuable 48 runs, giving Joburg Super Kings a solid batting foundation in the first innings. Soon after his wicket, Wiaan Mulder was also dismissed for 43 runs. His innings was equally impressive, as he struck at a strike rate of 153, hitting three fours and three sixes.

By taking back-to-back wickets of these two batters, Pretoria Capitals came back into the game. They applied more pressure by taking wickets in the middle overs to halt the charge of Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Ranjane down the order.

However, a fine knock by Akeal Hosein disrupted their plans, as he smashed quick 22 runs to lift the scoring rate of Joburg Super Kings. As a result, they managed to score 168 runs in the first innings for the loss of 6 wickets.

Will Smeed, Bryce Parsons Power Capitals’ Strong Opening

When Pretoria Capitals came out to chase the target, they got off to a great start. A fine batting display by Will Smeed and Bryce Parsons negated all the bowling plans of Joburg Super Kings. Both openers played strongly in the Powerplay to give their team a solid foundation in the chase.

The duo was looking well set to score big runs, however, Akeal Hosein came up with a perfect delivery to dismiss Will Smeed in the 9th over. Soon after, Shai Hope also lost his wicket after scoring just 2 runs. These quick dismissals brought huge pressure on Capitals from which they never recovered.

The middle order of Pretoria Capitals completely failed, as no batter managed to score more than 15 runs individually. This put immense pressure on Bryce Parsons, who was dismissed in the 13th over after scoring 41 runs. The tailenders of Capitals also failed to offer any resistance, allowing JSK bowlers to dominate the death overs comfortably.

As a result, Joburg Super Kings won the match by restricting Pretoria Capitals to just 146 runs in the second innings. Duan Jansen was named Player of the Match, as he took 4 wickets in four overs while conceding just 23 runs.
