Joao Fonseca Reaches Quarter-finals with Stunning Roland Garros Masterclass Over Casper Ruud
Joao Fonseca continued his impressive run at the French Open 2026, becoming the youngest player remaining in the men's draw after defeating former finalist Casper Ruud to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
The Brazilian teenager overcame the 15th-seeded Norwegian 7-5, 7-6(8), 5-7, 6-2 on Court Philippe-Chatrier, extending a breakthrough tournament that has already produced some of the biggest wins of his career. The result means Joao Fonseca reaches the Quarter-finals of a Grand Slam event for the first time.
Fonseca entered the second week in Paris with growing momentum after eliminating higher-ranked opponents earlier in the tournament. Against Ruud, a two-time French Open runner-up known for his consistency on clay, the 19-year-old delivered another composed performance across four sets.
The opening stages were closely contested, with both players creating opportunities on serve. Fonseca eventually gained the decisive breakthrough late in the first set before edging a tense second-set tiebreak. Ruud responded by claiming the third set to keep the contest alive, but the Brazilian quickly regained control in the fourth.
The victory adds another significant milestone to a tournament that has transformed Joao Fonseca from an emerging prospect into one of the standout performers in the men's draw. With aggressive baseline play and confidence in key moments, he repeatedly matched Ruud's experience on one of tennis' biggest stages.
"It was tough, Casper plays good here, I mean he's a very experienced guy and he knows how to play here in this amazing court," Fonseca said in his on-court interview.
"It was tough in the beginning but I played really well in the important moments in the first and second sets. I was very happy because of that.
"I just try to be me on court, try to be happy, try to hit winners, try to hit good shots and bring entertainment."
Former French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten was among those watching from the stands. Fonseca acknowledged the influence of his fellow Brazilian after the match.
"He's an idol for our sport and country, for his charisma and how humble he is," Fonseca said of Kuerten.
"He was here for my first time at Roland Garros when I was a junior. It is a pleasure to have him here and a pleasure to beat a tough opponent in front of him."
The result means Joao Fonseca defeats Casper Ruud to advance into the last eight, where he will face Czech player Jakub Mensik for a place in the semi-finals.
