Jeff Bezos Consortium Secures 38 Percent Stake in Liverpool
A consortium featuring Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has acquired close to 38 percent of Liverpool, according to a report by The Athletic, significantly more than the one-third stake initially reported.
The group, operating through 1892 Holdings, has reportedly purchased around 38 percent of the Premier League club from Fenway Sports Group. The deal had previously been described as covering roughly one-third of Liverpool, but the latest figure puts the investment at a considerably larger level.
The consortium is led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia and also includes Bezos and Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co-founder. FSG confirmed on Friday that it had agreed the deal with 1892 Holdings.
There is also an option for the consortium to pursue a controlling stake in Liverpool during the next 12 months. However, that arrangement does not represent a formal commitment to take control of the club.
The scale of the transaction puts Bezos into English football ownership for the first time. The Amazon founder, whose estimated fortune stands at $256 billion, is the fourth-richest person in the world.
His involvement is also notable because he had previously been linked with potential purchases of NFL franchises, including the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders. The Liverpool investment marks his first move into sports team ownership.
Bhatia brings his own history in English football. He was a co-owner of Championship side QPR for 18 years before stepping away after his connection to the Liverpool deal became public.
Liverpool ownership stake developments come against the backdrop of FSG's long-term involvement at Anfield. The American group bought Liverpool for £300 million in 2010 and later sold around three percent to global sports investment firm Dynasty Equity in 2023.
Investment Comes Before New Season
The timing of the latest investment is also important for Liverpool's sporting plans. The club are due to begin their Premier League campaign away at Newcastle on Sunday after finishing fifth last season.
With the transfer window still open, the additional investment could give the club greater room to support manager Andoni Iraola in strengthening the squad. Liverpool have so far spent about £94 million on Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz since the end of last season.
For now, FSG remains in control, but the option attached to the deal means the ownership picture at Anfield could develop further over the coming year.
