Japan dominate U‑18 Hockey Asia Cup, defeat hosts Pakistan 3–0

Japan edged out Pakistan with a commanding 3–0 victory to clinch the Men’s U‑18 Asia Cup 2025 at Dazhou’s National Hockey Training Centre. With this triumph, Japan not only brought their unbeaten streak to the fore but also secured the prestigious continental crown.

The final remained cagey in the first quarter until Yuma Fujiwara broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute. He struck again in the 38th minute, doubling Japan’s lead. A 49th-minute penalty corner conversion by Tatsuaki Yasui sealed the result.

Despite their earlier dominance—crushing Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China, and edging Malaysia in a 4–3 shootout—Pakistan fell short in front of a passionate home crowd.

Japan’s performance reflected “discipline, skill and teamwork,” as affirmed by the Asian Hockey Federation on social media. The victory underscores Japan’s rising stature in Asian youth hockey.

Pakistan, meanwhile, puzzled by repeated missed penalty corners (including several in the third quarter), couldn't convert pressure into goals, despite strong early domination.

Tournament recap – Pakistan’s run

  • Group phase: Dominated with big wins over Hong Kong (8–0), Sri Lanka (9–0), and Bangladesh (6–3).

  • Quarter‑final: Edged China 2–1 with clinical finishing.

  • Semi‑final: Held 3–3 vs Malaysia before winning extra-time shootout 4–3.

Their unbeaten streak made them tournament favourites, but Japan's solid defence and clinical finishing proved decisive in the final.

What’s next?

  • Japan will earn qualification for next year’s Youth Hockey World Cup, carrying momentum into junior level contests.

  • Pakistan’s focus: Coach calls will centre on penalty-corner conversion during high-stakes matches.

  • Regional impact: Pakistan’s contested trip to the Asia Cup and Junior World Cup later this year hinges on touring security clearances—adding another layer to development concerns.

Japan's U‑18 champions have sent a clear message: their junior programme is thriving. Pakistan’s runners-up status is a positive signal—but improving killer instinct at finals remains key.
