Jannik Sinner Equals Novak Record as Italian Star Storms Into Rome Quarter Finals

World number one Jannik Sinner advanced to the Italian Open quarter-finals in Rome on Tuesday after a straight-sets win over Andrea Pellegrino, extending his dominant run in tennis and moving to a 31-match Masters 1000 winning streak that has drawn comparisons with Novak Djokovic.

The Italian won 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 16, taking early control of the match before closing it out in one hour and 29 minutes. The result also saw Jannik Sinner equal Novak record, matching Djokovic’s benchmark for consecutive Masters 1000 wins.

Pellegrino briefly tested the top seed in the second set after levelling at 3-3, but Sinner immediately broke back to regain control and serve out the match without further trouble.

Strong Run on the Masters Circuit

Sinner’s form on the ATP Tour has remained dominant throughout the season, with five consecutive Masters 1000 titles across Monte Carlo, Madrid, Miami, Indian Wells and Paris.

He now stands one title away from completing the full Masters 1000 set. A Rome title win would place him alongside Novak Djokovic as the only players to win all nine Masters 1000 events in modern tennis.

Sinner Reflects After Victory

"I’m very happy about the outcome. At the same time, I’m very happy for him. We played seven years ago on a smaller court, so it’s nice," Sinner said.

"From an Italian point of view, it’s amazing that there are so many Italians left in the draw. It’s a bit unfortunate at the same time because it’s in the round of 16. It’s been a very good match from both of us. Hopefully I’m ready for the quarter-finals."

He added: "The conditions were tricky, with some wind at the start, so it wasn't easy. I'm pleased with how I'm handling these situations. The stages are getting bigger and bigger, and I'm happy to put myself in these positions. A day off tomorrow will be important for me to rest."

Elsewhere, Italy’s Luciano Darderi produced a surprise result by defeating second seed Alexander Zverev 1-6, 7-6(10), 6-0 to reach the quarter-finals.
