Rain-Hit Opening Session Sees Jamieson Remove Debutant Gay at Lord’s
The opening morning of the first Test between England and New Zealand never fully got going as persistent rain disrupted play at Lord’s. By the time the players were forced off the field, England had managed just 24 runs for the loss of one wicket in ten overs.
For a team often associated with aggressive batting, England adopted a more measured approach. Ben Duckett, in particular, showed patience early on, even leaving consecutive deliveries from Matt Henry during the opening exchanges. His approach appeared to reflect Ben Stokes’ pre-match emphasis on playing "smarter cricket".
Memorable Start Ends Quickly for Gay
Much of the pre-match attention had centered around Emilio Gay, who received his first England Test cap from Alastair Cook before play began.
The left-hander enjoyed a dream start when Kyle Jamieson delivered a full toss with his first ball to the batter. Gay confidently drove it through the covers for four, collecting the first boundary of his Test career.
He followed it up with another impressive shot in Jamieson’s next over, striking a stylish on-drive straight down the ground. At that stage, the New Zealand pacer appeared to be searching for rhythm after returning to first-class cricket following six months out with back-related issues.
However, Jamieson quickly found his range.
Bowling from around the wicket, he produced a delivery that moved just enough to trouble Gay. The batter edged the ball, and Daryl Mitchell completed a low catch at first slip to end the debut innings before it could develop into something more substantial.
Bethell Settles Before Rain Arrives
Gay’s departure brought Jacob Bethell to the crease for his first Test innings since scoring 154 in the final Ashes Test in Sydney earlier this year.
Despite recently dealing with a finger injury suffered during his IPL stint with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Bethell looked comfortable at the crease. He remained unbeaten on 4 when the weather interrupted proceedings.
Duckett was also still there on 12 not out, having struck the only boundary of his innings with a confident cover drive off Matt Henry.
Weather Takes Control
Rain arrived at the end of the tenth over and left the umpires with little choice but to call an early lunch at 12:45 pm. Forecasts suggested further showers throughout the day, raising concerns about extended interruptions.
While the session provided only brief moments of action, Kyle Jamieson gave New Zealand the early advantage, while England vs New Zealand supporters were left hoping for clearer skies and a fuller contest later in the day.
