Italian cricket is facing serious scrutiny after Italian Cricket Harassment Allegations surfaced just days after the men’s team wrapped up a landmark campaign ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 cycle.
A player from Italy’s women’s side has accused Prabath Ekneligoda, the national women’s cricket co-ordinator, of sexual harassment. The Federazione Cricket Italiana moved swiftly, issuing an immediate precautionary suspension while the federal prosecutor examines the case.
The board confirmed the step was taken to protect athletes and preserve the integrity of the sport. Officials stressed due process and the presumption of innocence while investigations continue.
Ekneligoda’s lawyer has denied the claims, saying there are ulterior motives behind the complaint. Reports also stated that he was present during the men’s recent global tournament campaign, though not in any official capacity. According to the board’s media manager, he travelled privately and held no formal role within the delegation.
The federation says it will cooperate fully with authorities and reserves the right to take further action depending on the findings.
The timing could hardly be worse. The Italian Cricket Harassment Allegations arrive amid wider instability inside the federation. President Maria Lorena Haz Paz has been removed following Italy’s tournament exit, while CEO Luca Bruno Malaspina confirmed that six board members resigned, dissolving the Federal Council.
Officials insist those departures are unrelated to the investigation. Still, the optics are troubling.
All of this unfolds as Italy builds momentum toward the T20 World Cup 2026, after a spirited men’s campaign that included a commanding win over Nepal and a competitive showing against England.
On the field, progress is visible. Off it, uncertainty lingers.
