Ireland is slated to tour Bangladesh in November for a two-test and T20I series. It would be a high-profile tour, as Ireland has announced five uncapped players for the test series. They have picked various new names in the squad to bolster the team that will take on the tigers at home. The team will be captained by Andrew Balbirnie, who has done relatively well as an on-field leader in recent times.
Meanwhile, Mark Adair and Josh Little will return to the T20I squad after missing the games against England at home. Ireland felt their absence in the games against England, as the team’s bowling struggled to contain the rampant English batters. The return of these bowlers will certainly strengthen the Irish T20 side that is looking to prepare for the all-important T20 World Cup in 2026.
Regarding the test side, many new names have been picked to give the Irish team a new makeover. The addition of Cade Carmichael and Stephen Doheny will allow Ireland to bolster its top-order batting, while Jordan Neill and Liam McCarthy will bring variety to the pace bowling.
"It is fantastic to have Test cricket on the horizon again, and with that, we are excited to see Cade Carmichael come into the Test squad following his ODI debut against the West Indies earlier this year," said Ireland Men's selector Andrew White.
He further praised Cade Carmichael’s abilities, citing his recent performances against Afghanistan A in a four-day match in the UAE. It is understood that he has been picked in the test team on the basis of the same performance.
"Not only has he had a great season, but he has also demonstrated the qualities required to be an international cricketer in this format. Cade compiled an excellent century against Afghanistan A in a four-day match in the UAE earlier this year, and anyone watching his two ODI appearances against West Indies will have noticed his composure and his technical ability against quick bowling,” said Andrew White.
The test selector then talked about Stephen Doheny, who is a highly promising emerging star of Irish domestic cricket. He talked about the technical changes Doheny has recently made to his game, primarily by playing four-day cricket regularly.
"Stephen Doheny is another player who has had a good domestic season and demonstrated a number of technical changes that we hope will enable him to be successful going forward,” said Andrew White.
He further highlighted how the team will manage fast bowlers in back-to-back matches. Ireland has a very busy cricket schedule ahead, so the selector emphasized managing the group intelligently to keep them prepared for the upcoming tours.
"It is likely that we will need all of our seamers across the back-to-back Tests. Given the recent number of injuries we have been managing and the volume of cricket in the coming months, we will need to proactively manage the group in what will undoubtedly be hot and humid conditions. This is only the second time we have played consecutive Tests as part of a tour - it's a challenge I know the squad will relish as they adapt to Asian conditions." said Andrew White.
Analysing the players named in the squad, it would be interesting to see how Ireland will pick its Playing XI for the actual matches. It is understood that Bangladesh will be a new challenge for these players because many of them have not played much in the Asian conditions before.
