Iraq Announces World Cup Squad for 2026 as Aymen Hussein Will Lead Iraq

Iraq announces a world cup squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026, with head coach Graham Arnold confirming a 26-man group for the tournament in North America.

The squad largely retains the players who helped Iraq secure qualification earlier this year, ending a four-decade absence from football's biggest stage. Iraq booked their place at the finals after overcoming Bolivia in the intercontinental playoffs and will now prepare for a challenging group featuring France, Senegal and Norway.

Aymen Hussein will lead Iraq at the tournament, with the experienced striker expected to spearhead the attack alongside Ali Al Hamadi, Ali Jassim and Ali Yousef. Hussein remains one of the most influential figures in the national setup and will be central to Iraq's hopes of progressing beyond the group stage.

The midfield unit combines domestic and European-based talent. Arnold has again placed his trust in Zidane Iqbal and Aimar Sher, both of whom are expected to play key roles in linking defence and attack. Amir Al Ammari, Kevin Yakob and Ibrahim Bayesh also provide depth and experience in the centre of the pitch.

In defence, Iraq have selected a group featuring Frans Putros, Rebin Sulaka, Hussein Ali and Merchas Doski. One of the notable decisions was the omission of Dario Naamo, who recently changed his sporting nationality after representing Finland at youth level.

Goalkeeping responsibilities will be shared between Jalal Hassan, Fahad Talib and Ahmed Basil. The coaching staff have also kept Kamil Saadi involved during preparations as additional cover ahead of the tournament.

Iraq's return to the World Cup marks their first appearance in 40 years. Arnold's final selection reflects a balance of established internationals and younger players as the team prepares for its opening fixtures in Group I.
