While franchises were earlier informed on December 15, 2025, that the season would commence on March 26, the league has since decided to push the opening by two days. The change has been communicated internally, and the final is locked in for May 31.
The IPL schedule 2026 has not yet been officially released. The delay is linked to pending announcements regarding assembly elections in Assam, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. With major IPL venues located in these states, the organisers are taking precautionary steps before finalising the fixture list.
Kolkata and Chennai serve as the home grounds for Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, respectively, while Guwahati in Assam acts as the Rajasthan Royals’ secondary venue. The scheduling challenge revolves around coordinating match dates around potential polling days and security requirements.
The IPL Governing Council is expected to meet next week to determine how and when the complete schedule will be unveiled. In past election years, including 2009, 2014, 2019, and 2024, the tournament fixtures were announced in two phases to accommodate national or state polls.
The council will now assess whether to adopt a similar approach or wait until the Election Commission of India confirms polling dates for the three states.
Another key topic for discussion will be the venue for the opening fixture, which will feature defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Concerns remain around hosting matches at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium following last June’s tragic stampede during RCB’s title celebrations that claimed 11 lives.
RCB has reportedly explored alternate venues, including Navi Mumbai, Raipur, and Pune, while discussions continue with the Karnataka State Cricket Association regarding their seven home matches.
With planning entering its final phase, fans can expect official confirmation soon as the countdown to IPL 2026 gathers pace.
