Sri Lanka limited India to 269/8 in 47 overs in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 opener at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati despite the solid batting performances from key Indian players. The star with the ball was Inoka Ranaweera, who took four wickets and an amazing three wickets in one over. The fighting half-centuries of Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur were enough to push the team to a competitive total, but the bowlers of Sri Lanka kept the pressure on throughout the innings.

Match Summary:

Sri Lanka lost the toss and chose to bowl first in the World Cup opener, which was affected by the cloud conditions and the possibility of dew falling in the latter part of the match. But valuable contributions from their middle and lower orders helped them reach a total of 269/8

Inoka Ranaweera of Sri Lanka made a significant contribution to halting India’s momentum, while Udeshika Prabodhani provided excellent support. Helping Sri Lanka keep India’s score in check.

Key Moments:

  • Early Interventions: Bowlers of Sri Lanka surprised the opponents early and took important wickets, such as those of Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal, at critical moments.
  • Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur Stand: A vital 103-run alliance between Deepti Sharma (53) and Amanjot Kaur (57) gave life back to the Indian innings, leading it to an acceptable figure.
  • The Magic in Ranaweera: Ranaweera’s four-wicket haul, including a three-wicket one-over, took the match in favor of Sri Lanka.
  • India Recovery: India got a late burst as Sneh Rana hit a quickfire 28 not out off only 15 balls as the middle-order crumbled.

Analysis:

The Indian team faced its fair share of difficulties when Smriti Mandhana was dismissed early, but the pressure on the team increased when they lost wickets consecutively. However, the powerful partnership of Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur somehow righted the ship, putting India on an equal footing at 269/8.

The star of the day with the ball was Sri Lankan Inoka Ranaweera, who had four wickets and gave away 46 runs in a game-shifting three-wicket over. Two wickets came too late, though, by Udeshika Prabodhani, and the bowlers of Sri Lanka were able to contain the Indian score against the late flourish of Sneh Rana.

Looking Ahead:

This will mean that Sri Lanka will now have to chase 270 runs to secure the first game of the tournament. While India’s total is competitive, the pitch at Barsapara Cricket Stadium gives some relief to the bowlers, at least in the initial part of the game. Sri Lanka will seek to build partnerships and take advantage of India’s bowling attack as they attempt to chase down the target.

The game is set to be a thrilling one, as the two teams aim to start their World Cup campaign on a strong note.
