GALLE: A masterclass in spin bowling from debutant Manav Suthar and veteran Ravindra Jadeja handed the visitors a massive advantage before weather forced an early end to India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Day 3. 

At stumps on Day 3, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 284, yielding a formidable 178-run first-innings lead to the Indian team. Earlier in the morning, India’s first innings wrapped up swiftly for 462 runs when Prasidh Krishna was caught behind off the fourth ball of the day. Backed by Devdutt Padikkal’s spectacular 167, the Indian bowling unit took center stage during IND vs SL 1st Test Day 3 to torment the host nation's top order.

Spin Twins Dismantle Sri Lankan Top Order

The hosts endured a nightmare start to their response, quickly sliding to a perilous 90 for 5 under relentless pressure. Left-arm orthodox spinner Manav Suthar made an immediate splash on the international scene, striking with his very first over in Test cricket. Suthar extracted sharp turn and overspin from the Galle surface, baffling the Sri Lankan batsmen and finishing with stellar figures of 4 for 76.

At the other end, Ravindra Jadeja proved equally lethal. He capitalised on the natural variations of the pitch to trigger a collapse, picking up 3 for 57 and reaching a career milestone of 350 Test wickets. Kuldeep Yadav added to the hosts' misery by deceiving Kamindu Mendis in flight, leaving Sri Lanka staring at the real possibility of a follow-on.

Dinusha and Dickwella Mount Resilient Fightback

Just as an early finish loomed on India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Day 3, Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella staged a phenomenal counter-attack. The duo defied the spinning ball to forge a critical 146-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Showing profound application, the young Dinusha anchored the innings expertly to register his maiden Test century.

Dickwella provided aggressive support, scoring a fluent 80 off 115 balls. However, his quest for a three-figure score remained unfulfilled when Prasidh Krishna produced a brilliant delivery with the old ball to break the stand.  Following Dickwella's departure, Suthar and Jadeja cleared the tail rapidly, losing the final three wickets for just 48 runs.

Rain Halts Final Session

The moment the Sri Lankan innings concluded at 284, heavy dark clouds blanketed the stadium. A sharp downpour forced the groundsmen to rush out with the covers, preventing India from starting their second innings. Umpires officially called stumps due to persistent rain and deteriorating light, locking in India’s commanding 178-run cushion. 

With two days left, India remains in the driver’s seat to secure critical World Test Championship points.
