Axar & Gill Star as India Defeat England by Six Wickets in 1st ODI

Birmingham: India defeated England by six wickets victory at Edgbaston, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. Chasing a target of 259 runs, the tourists bounced back firmly from their recent 4-0 thrashing in the T20I leg, completing the pursuit with 28 balls to spare.

Top-Order Jolts and Captain's Resistance

The Indian response began with intent but was briefly halted when Sam Curran and Jofra Archer dismissed the veteran pairing of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in rapid succession, leaving the scoreboard reading a tense 58 for 2 in powerplay. However, captain Shubman Gill anchored the recovery. Exhibiting pristine timing, Gill struck a fluent, point-proving 80 off 75 balls, hitting eleven boundaries and a maximum. He constructed a vital 101-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer (35) before severe muscle cramps forced him to retire hurt.

A momentary wobble saw Iyer and KL Rahul depart in quick succession. Suddenly, India were stuttering at 160 for 4. Yet, any hopes of an English resurgence were firmly extinguished by the left-handed all-round duo of Axar Patel and Washington Sundar. The pair paced their innings beautifully to mount an unbroken 102-run stand. Patel spearheaded the counter-attack, blasting his half-century off just 52 deliveries. Sundar matched him with a meticulous rotation of strike to register his own milestone fifty.

English Top-Order Capitulation

Earlier in the day, England captain Harry Brook opted to bat first on a pitch expected to favor runs. Spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah and the explosive Gurnoor Brar, the visitors wrecked England's top tier. Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell fell after powerplay, triggering a catastrophic collapse that saw the hosts slump from 61 for 0 to a dismal 107 for 6. 

Joe Root stepped up with a gritty, unbeaten 76, stitching together a salvaging 121-run partnership alongside Liam Dawson. Dawson registered a superb career-best 68 across formats to ensure the bowler-friendly target crossed the 250-mark.

Axar Patel Decimates the Tail

Just as England looked primed for a heavier finish, spinner Axar Patel tore through the lower order. Patel finished with stellar match-winning figures of 4 for 62, wiping away the tail and wrapping up the England innings for 258 in 47.5 overs. For his versatile performance with both ball and bat, Patel was rightfully adjudged the Player of the Match.

The teams will now head in Cardiff for the critical second ODI.
