India Bowl Out England For 258 In 1st ODI Despite Joe Root Heroics

Birmingham: A masterclass in middle-order resilience from Joe Root and a clinical late-overs bowling display by Axar Patel headlined an enthralling first innings at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, where England was bowled out for 258 in 47.5 overs against India.

Top-Order Meltdown

Opting to bat first, England’s opening pair of Ben Duckett and debutant Jacob Bethell navigated a testing, swing-heavy initial Powerplay. The duo ground out a 61-run opening stand amidst multiple plays and misses. However, the introduction of pacer Gurnoor Brar completely shifted the momentum. Brar produced a spectacular double-strike in the 13th over, removing both Bethell (61-1) and Duckett (63-2) in quick succession.

Sensing blood, captain Shubman Gill immediately recalled spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. The tactical masterstroke paid off instantly as Bumrah induced an edge from England skipper Harry Brook, caught comfortably at slip for 1. Prasidh Krishna then amplified the hosts' misery by packing back Jos Buttler and Sam Curran in the space of four deliveries. 

From a steady position, England had suffered a catastrophic collapse, losing five wickets for just 29 runs to sit precariously at 80-5.

The Rescue Act

With the innings in absolute jeopardy, veteran anchor Joe Root was joined by bowling all-rounder Liam Dawson. The pair showed immense temperament against a surging Indian bowling unit. Benefitting from a massive reprieve when Shivam Dube dropped Root early in his innings, the experienced batter rebuilt methodically.

Alongside Dawson, who played with positive intent, the duo compiled a crucial 121-run partnership. Both batsmen brought up vital half-centuries, pushing England past the 200-run mark and dragging the hosts back into competitive territory.

Axar’s Late Flurry

Just as England looked set for a massive final flourish, left-arm spinner Axar Patel ran through the lower order. Patel broke the stubborn partnership and dismantled the tail, capitalizing on the batsmen's urgency to hit big. He claimed the final four wickets of the innings between the 41st and 50th overs, registering brilliant career-best figures of 4/62.

Root fought valiantly until the end, remaining stranded on an unbeaten 76* off 76 deliveries. Patel wrapped up the proceedings by clean-bowling Josh Tongue for a duck, leaving England all out for 258.
