Gill and Virat Hit Centuries as India Defeats West Indies in 1st ODI

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A masterclass in modern white-ball chasing saw India defeat West Indies in the 1st ODI by eight wickets. Powered by Virat and Gill's centuries, the hosts effortlessly tracked down a competitive target of 296, crossing the finish line with 50 balls to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Opting to bowl first under overcast skies, India initially struggled to find breakthroughs as the West Indies openers mounted a spectacular assault. Playing with fearless intent, Justin Greaves anchored the innings with a magnificent maiden century, compiling 101 off 108 balls. 

Alongside John Campbell, who contributed a fluent 62, Greaves stitched together a formidable 135-run opening stand that threatened to take the game away from the hosts. However, India’s premier wrist-spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, turned the tide in the middle overs. 

Displaying exceptional control and variations, Kuldeep broke the opening partnership and tore through the Caribbean middle order. His brilliant figures of 4 for 40 triggered a sudden collapse, restricting the visitors from launching a late-overs blitz. 

Despite some lower-order resistance, the West Indies innings concluded at 295 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs, a total that looked competitive but ultimately proved inadequate against a relentless Indian batting order.

India's response in the WI vs IND 1st ODI was nothing short of a statement. While Rohit Sharma provided a trademark, explosive start at the top, his dismissal set the stage for a batting clinic. Captain Shubman Gill joined forces with Virat Kohli, and the duo systematically dismantled the West Indian bowling attack with a flawless 151-run partnership.

Gill mixed textbook elegance with aggressive running between the wickets, reaching his milestone century with a boundary through the covers. He finished on an impressive 110 off 108 balls. 

At the other end, Kohli was an unstoppable force. The modern-day maestro paced his innings beautifully before unleashing a flurry of boundaries, smoking an unbeaten 139 off just 88 deliveries, including nine towering sixes.

The Caribbean bowlers found no answers to the onslaught on a flattening surface, as India comfortably hunted down 300 for 2 in just 41.4 overs. This commanding victory sets a menacing tone for the rest of the tour, with the action now shifting to Guwahati for the second ODI on September 30.
