India Defeated Pakistan 5-3 in Hockey World Cup 2026 Encounter

AMSTELVEEN: In a blistering, high-octane encounter at the Wagener Hockey Stadium, India defeated Pakistan 5–3 in a thrilling Pool D encounter on Wednesday at the FIH Men's India vs Pakistan hockey world cup tournament.

Striking with lethal precision, a brace each from skipper Harmanpreet Singh and forward Abhishek ensured India booked their spot in the crossover second round, while simultaneously crashing their traditional rivals out of title contention. The match erupted into life in the opening quarter when the lethal Indian penalty corner battery made its mark. Harmanpreet Singh drew first blood in the 5th minute, unleashing a powerful drag-flick to unlock the Pakistani defense.

India sustained their relentless high press, and forward Abhishek doubled the advantage in the 11th minute with a brilliantly executed field goal, forcing Pakistan onto the backfoot early. The second quarter turned into an absolute goal-fest. Harmanpreet struck again via a penalty corner in the 21st minute to stretch India's lead to a dominant 3–0. Refusing to surrender, Pakistan hit back instantly. Hannan Shahid produced a magnificent field goal a minute later, only for Abhishek to respond immediately with his second of the match, restoring India's three-goal cushion at 4–1.

Pakistan's drag-flicker Sufyan Khan then converted a vital penalty corner right before halftime, keeping the Green Shirts alive at 4–2. India restored structural control in the third quarter. In the 35th minute, midfielder Hardik Singh stepped up to cleanly convert a penalty stroke, delivering crucial insurance for the Men in Blue. Despite a late green card to Rajinder Singh, India’s deep defensive structure managed to absorb a string of Pakistani penalty corner routines.

The final quarter saw Pakistan push forward with absolute desperation. Hannan Shahid showcased his world-class caliber yet again, slotting a stunning field goal in the 46th minute to narrow the gap to 5–3. A tense final five minutes ensued after India’s Aditya Arjun Lalage was shown a late yellow card. Down to ten men, the Indian defensive wall held firm, frustrating Pakistan’s final penalty corner attempt in the 58th minute to secure the historic victory.

With this result, India marches on into the knockout stages of the India vs Pakistan hockey world cup after finishing second in Pool D behind England. Meanwhile, a heartbroken Pakistan squad is relegated to the 9th-to-16th classification tiers, extending their decade-long winless drought against their neighbors.
