India Complete 3-0 Whitewash as Jaiswal and Prasidh Dominate in Chennai
CHENNAI: India secured a dominant 9-wicket victory over Afghanistan at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday. India completed a 3-0 whitewash against Afghanistan in the One-Day International series. Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a brilliant hundred, and fast bowler Prasidh Krishna took five wickets to seal the victory.
Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat first. However, their top order struggled early against Prasidh Krishna's fierce opening spell. Krishna found excellent bounce and carry on the Chennai pitch. He quickly dismissed four of Afghanistan’s top five batsmen, leaving the visitors reeling at 36 for 4.
Shahidi’s Resolute Fightback
Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi came to the rescue with a gritty, valiant innings. Shahidi anchored the team by scoring 102 runs off 131 balls, hitting 13 boundaries and one six. He found a reliable partner in Azmatullah Omarzai, who scored a quick counter-attacking 50 runs off 56 balls. The pair fought back with an important partnership to rebuild the innings.
Once Krishna returned to clean up the tail, Afghanistan's resistance faded. Krishna finished with career-best figures of 5 for 23 in 8.2 overs. Afghanistan was eventually bowled out for 218 runs in 44.2 overs. Due to a rare rules infraction where Shahidi ran on the danger area of the pitch three times, Afghanistan conceded a five-run penalty, meaning India started their chase at 5 for no loss.
India's Flawless Chase
The modest target of 219 proved to be incredibly easy for the Indian openers. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal put on a clinical 170-run opening partnership that completely took the game away from Afghanistan. Rohit Sharma batted with his traditional style and flair, smashing 79 runs off 69 balls, including nine fours and three sixes.
When Rohit finally got out to Mohammad Nabi, the damage was already done. Jaiswal continued to dominate the opposition bowling lineup. The young left-hander played beautifully to bring up his second ODI century, finishing unbeaten on 110 runs off 86 balls* with 14 fours and 3 sixes. Shreyas Iyer joined him to finish the match, scoring a quick 20* runs.
India cruised to 224 for 1 in just 28.4 overs, winning with 128 balls to spare. Prasidh Krishna was named Player of the Match for his outstanding bowling display. This convincing win caps off a highly successful home series for India, who also won the one-off Test match in New Chandigarh earlier in the month.
