Ind-W Defeats NL-W by 95 Runs in Group 1 Clash in T20 World Cup 2026

LEEDS: An outstanding batting masterclass combined with a fabulous bowling display propelled India Women defeat Netherlands Women by 95 runs in ICC Women's T20 World Cup Group A encounter.

Chasing a mammoth target, the Dutch batting lineup unraveled under intense pressure, folding for 114 in 17.3 overs. The victory significantly boosts India's net run rate as they eye a spot in the semifinals.

Openers Lay the Foundation

Earlier in the afternoon, Netherlands captain Babette de Leede won the toss and elected to bowl under overcast sky conditions. The decision, however, backfired immediately as India’s opening duo of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma launched a ferocious assault.

The pair stitched together a spectacular 115-run opening stand off just 70 deliveries, completely dismantling the Dutch bowling blueprint. Verma, seeking to recapture her trademark aggressive form, reached a quickfire half-century, smashing 55 runs off 38 balls with 10 crisp boundaries.

At the other end, vice-captain Mandhana was in sublime touch. Dictating play with elegant drives and authoritative pulls, she notched up her second consecutive tournament fifty, anchoring the innings with a brilliant 74 off 47 balls, spiced with 11 fours and a six.

Late Aggression Propel India to Record Total

When Caroline de Lange (2 for 32) finally broke the opening partnership, triggering a brief wobble where India lost three wickets in two overs, the middle order clinicality took over. Jemimah Rodrigues contributed a steadying 19, before wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh injected pure adrenaline into the death overs.

Ghosh blazed a crucial 20 off a mere eight balls, clubbing two massive sixes. All-rounder Deepti Sharma provided the perfect finishing touch, hammering a six and a four off the only two balls she faced.

The late surge guided India to a monumental 209 for 5. This landmark score stands as India's highest-ever total in Women’s T20 World Cup history and the third-highest overall in the prestigious tournament.

Dutch Chase Crumbles Despite Resistance

Faced with an asking rate of over 10 runs per over, the Netherlands required an extraordinary start. Openers Phebe Molkenboer and Heather Siegers began steadily, but India’s disciplined bowling attack gave them no room to breathe.

Debutant Nandani Sharma made an immediate impact, breaking the opening stand and finishing with impressive figures of 2 for 22. Skipper Babette de Leede fought a lone, resilient battle for her team, top-scoring with a measured 28 off 27 deliveries. However, she lacked substantial support from the other end as wickets tumbled regularly.

The star of the Indian bowling performance was spinner Shree Charani, who completely broke the spine of the Dutch middle order. Charani delivered a masterful spell of flight and deception, claiming 4 wickets for just 19 runs in her 4 overs. Verma then returned with the ball to wrap up the tail efficiently, taking 3 for 20 in 3.2 overs as the Netherlands were bundled out.

Injury Blurs the Celebrations

Despite the comprehensive victory, a shadow of worry hung over the Indian camp. Rising young spinner Shreyanka Patil suffered a suspected ankle injury during the fifth over of the Dutch chase and had to be stretchered off the field, creating a potential selection headache for the team management ahead of the upcoming fixtures.

Mandhana was justly named Player of the Match for her magnificent match-winning knock.
