Abhishek Sharma's Blistering Century Seals Series Win for India Against New Zealand
WELLINGTON: India defeats New Zealand in 3rd T20I by six wickets at the Hnry Stadium. Riding on Abhishek Sharma's century, the visitors effortlessly chased down a daunting 199-run target in just 13.2 overs, securing an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
Earlier in the evening, after being sent in to bat, New Zealand posted what looked like a competitive total of 198/3. The hosts' innings was anchored by a career-best, unbeaten 89 off 52 balls from Daryl Mitchell, alongside an aggressive 40 off 25 from opening batter Finn Allen. However, the Indian bowling unit managed to apply the breaks in the final overs, with Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel picking up crucial wickets to restrict the damage.
What followed in the second innings was pure cricketing carnage that left the Kiwi bowlers searching for answers. Promoted to open the batting together, the duo of Abhishek Sharma and 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi completely obliterated the new ball.
Showing absolutely no regard for the home attack, the pair raced past 70 runs within the first three overs. They rewrote the record books by hammering 118 runs in the 6-over Powerplay, registering the highest-ever Powerplay total in men's T20I history.
Sooryavanshi fell just short of a well-deserved milestone, departing for a rapid 45 off 19 deliveries. But his dismissal did nothing to halt the momentum. Abhishek continued his relentless assault, displaying staggering power to race to his hundred in just 35 deliveries.
The left-hander finished with a jaw-dropping 113 off 38 balls, a blistering knock punctuated by 11 sixes and 9 boundaries. In doing so, he also became the first Indian batsman to cross the milestone of 11 centuries in overall T20 cricket, surpassing Virat Kohli's long-standing record.
Though Kyle Jamieson struck late to dismiss the centurion and Sanju Samson, the foundation had been emphatically laid. With a massive 40 balls left to spare, India won by 6 wickets as Naman Dhir struck a boundary to cap off one of the most dominant chases witnessed in the format.
With the series mathematically sealed, both teams will now travel north to Auckland for the fourth T20I at Eden Park on Friday, where New Zealand will look to salvage pride and India will look to continue their rotation policy.
