LAHORE: Iftikhar Ahmed has set his sights on returning to the national side and believes strong performances in PSL 11 could help him push for selection. The Peshawar Zalmi all-rounder spoke to the media ahead of the start of the Pakistan Super League season, stating that his focus remains on performing consistently in the tournament.
Iftikhar last represented Pakistan in a T20 international in 2024 and has since been out of the national setup. He said his preparation for the league has gone well but admitted that playing matches without spectators would not be the same experience for players.
“PSL preparation is going good,” he said.
“It wouldn’t be as enjoyable without the crowd, but now we have to enjoy without them. The people of Peshawar love cricket so much that the stadium was packed during the National T20 [Cup],” he continued.
The all-rounder also spoke about the absence of matches in Peshawar during the upcoming season, saying fans had been waiting for PSL matches in the city. He added that his primary goal remains performing well enough to return to international cricket.
“I am a professional player, and I plan to play for Pakistan. I want to be the best all-rounder in [PSL] so that I can make a comeback into the Pakistan team,” the 35-year-old maintained.
Iftikhar also confirmed that he has not had any discussions with Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson regarding a return to the national side.
“There has been no contact with Mike Hesson. If I perform, everyone will see it. Performances are not hidden,” he concluded.
The upcoming Pakistan Super League season will begin on March 26 in Karachi and Lahore, with the tournament featuring eight teams and a total of 44 matches.
