The Champions Trophy 2017 will always have a special place in Pakistani cricket fans’ hearts. Entering the tournament as the lowest-ranked team, Pakistan’s journey was nothing short of spectacular.
After an initial setback against India in the group stage, Sarfaraz Ahmed’s side bounced back with dominant performances against South Africa and Sri Lanka to reach the semi-finals. They stunned England in the semi-final before setting up a highly anticipated final against India at The Oval.
In the final, Fakhar Zaman’s brilliant century (114 off 106 balls) set the tone for a commanding total of 338/4. The Pakistani bowlers then produced a masterclass, with Mohammad Amir dismantling India’s top order, dismissing Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shikhar Dhawan in quick succession. Hasan Ali’s fiery spell (3/19) sealed Pakistan’s first-ever ICC Champions Trophy title as they bowled India out for just 158, winning by a record 180 runs.
This victory was Pakistan’s first ICC tournament win since the 2009 T20 World Cup and remains one of the country’s greatest cricketing moments.
Can the Men in Green defend their title and take the world by a storm or will another upset team be coming back home?
The ICC Champions Trophy has witnessed several historic moments, with teams etching their names in cricketing history. While the tournament has been on hold since 2017, its legacy continues to thrive. As cricket fans eagerly await the Champions Trophy’s return in 2025, Pakistan’s 2017 triumph remains one of the most memorable victories in the tournament’s history.
