England Face Major Haaland Test in World Cup Quarter-Final
England’s hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup semi-finals may depend on how well they control Norway striker Erling Haaland.
The two teams will meet in the quarter-finals at Miami Stadium. England reached the last eight after beating Mexico 3-2, while Norway defeated Brazil 2-1, with Haaland scoring both goals.
Stopping Haaland will require a complete team effort. England must prevent Norway’s midfielders and wide players from finding him in dangerous areas. Applying pressure higher up the pitch could force Norway into rushed passes and reduce the service reaching their main striker.
However, England must also avoid leaving too much space behind their defence. Haaland has the pace and strength to punish any mistake, especially during quick counterattacks.
England’s centre-backs will need to communicate well and provide cover for one another. One defender may stay close to Haaland, while another protects the space behind. The full-backs and wingers must also stop crosses and low passes from reaching the penalty area.
Declan Rice could play a crucial role by blocking passes into Haaland and supporting the defence. England must also keep a close watch on Martin Odegaard, whose vision and passing can create chances if he is given too much freedom.
At the other end, Harry Kane will lead England’s attack. His finishing, link-up play and experience could help England keep Norway under pressure.
The match may become a major contest between Kane and Haaland. England may not stop Haaland completely, but limiting his chances could be the key to reaching the semi-finals.
